The Toyota Hilux is set to take its unbreakable DNA to new heights with the Tanzania premiere of an even tougher next-generation model range. The Toyota Hilux legacy is legendary. Since its introduction in 1969, the model has etched an enviable reputation for itself across the globe and the African continent, where its durability, strength and quality, has entrenched itself in the hearts of its proud owners.

Nowhere is this truer than in Tanzania, where the venerable Hilux is regarded, not merely as a mode of economical transport, but as a trusted part of daily business life. Indeed the Hilux has formed an integral part of Tanzania’s fabric, providing a lifeline to those in rural communities as well driving the wheels of industry. This is echoed in the sales charts where the Hilux proudly flies the flag of Tanzania’s top selling new commercial vehicle, and serves as both a business partner for the Government and private fleet sector.
“Hilux sales are a testament to the trust that our customers place in the product and reinforce the Toyota pillars of Quality, Durability and Reliability”, says Mahmood A. Karimjee, Executive Chairman and CEO of Toyota Tanzania Ltd - who in 2015 celebrated their 50th anniversary as the sole and authorised Toyota Distributor in Tanzania since 1965.
“The all-new 8th generation Hilux has been completely redesigned to mark a new era for pickups, bringing a genuine X-factor to the segment. It builds upon the rock solid reputation of its predecessors, and delivers a pickup bult for Tanzanian conditions, that is tougher and safer than ever before, while at the same time providing customers with the comfort and convenenince of today’s modern and multipurpose pickup” says Mahmood A. Karimjee, Executive Chairman and CEO.

Extreme Toughness

Underpinning the new model is an all-new frame, which is designed to combine improved handling, ride comfort, performance and collision safety with outstanding durability in even the most extreme driving environments. Improvements include 30mm thicker side rails and cross members which deliver 20% greater torsional rigidity. The number of connection points from chassis frame to upper body have been increased, accompanied by a 45% increase in spot welds (from 268 in previous generation to 388). Contributing to the durability of the new model is a new heavy-duty under-cover with additional reinforcement and increased thickness. The body makes use of higher tensile steel sheet achieving greater body strength while reducing weight. The more rigid chassis frame and new body are the foundation for the completely revised suspension.
The new Hilux’s off-road performance sees a major improvement with the 1KD and 2KD model’s ground clearance increased by +64mm and +67mm to 286mm respectively and thanks to new 17” all terrain tyres.

New Suspension

A new rugged suspension has been developed, delivering outstanding ride comfort and durability. The Hilux utilises a double-wishbone front suspension and leaf-spring type suspension with twin shock absorbers in the rear.  The length of the leaf spring has been increased by 100mm to 1400mm, reducing road surface vibration and the attachment point of the rear suspension moved to the front of the spring. Moving the attachment point 100mm forwards and lowering it by 25mm contributes to enhanced steering stability. The steering column has been redesigned to reduce vibration from the road, and the hydraulic power steering system has been fine-tuned to offer improved steering feel.

New Exterior Design

Perhaps the most striking feature of the new Hilux is the new adavnaced exterior design. The design team concentrated on creating a vehicle that would project a tough stance, whilst also exuding a sense of innovation and refinement. At the front, a prominent grille with strong horizontal bars extends towards the wrap-around headlights. The cabin roof has been carefully shaped to improve both its styling and practicality. It now features an aerodynamic ‘pagoda’-style V-shape which helps channel air over the roof and off the sides of the vehicle, rather than into the deck area, preventing turbulence and drag.

Innovative Interior Design

The interior design of the Hilux sets new standards for a pickup in terms of innovativion, comfort and user friendliness.
Taking centre stage is the new high-tech touch screen audio system, The driver instrumentation follows suit with the 1KD double cabin higher grade models receiving a full colour 4.2” multi-information display with easy to read displays. The driver can access a raft of information at the touch of the 4-way directional buttons mounted on the newly designed steering wheel. The steering wheel makes use of a horizontal spoke design and features rake and reach adjustability, as well as thumb rests and a thicker rim, to provide superb comfort and feel.

Increased Interior Space

The new Hilux benefits from increased interior space and greater seat comfort. The driver’s seat hip point has been raised by 10mm and the height adjustment range increased by 15mm, offering head and shoulder room increases of 8 and 19 mm respectively. The front seats feature a new frame structure with a longer and amply padded seat cushion. The rear seats receive similar treatment, with a reduction in thickness of the rear seat back providing rear occupants with 10mm more leg room. 1KD 3.0 litre double cabin models have a 60:40 split ‘tip-up’ rear seat cushion for even greater flexibility.
A cool feature is the Cool Box fitted in higher grade 1KD double cabin models in the form of a 2nd glove box, that cleverly uses the air-conditioner to cool or heat items placed inside.

Redesigned Rear Cargo Deck

The rear cargo deck has been redesigned and is now wider (by +79 mm), longer (by +19 mm) and stronger.

Safety Focus

The Hilux’s new stronger ladder-frame chassis improves safety performance and occupant protection. Energy absorption performance has been increased by 15% over the previous model.
The risk of pedestrian injury has also been reduced by the adoption of impact-absorbing structures to the front bumper, bonnet, fender bracket structure and cowl structure, reducing impact force to the head and the legs of pedestrians during a collision.
Spearheading the passive safety front is a host of Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) airbags. A standout feature is the addition of a new driver side knee airbag on all double cabin models. The 1KD 3.0 litre double cabin models boast a total of 7 airbags comprising driver and passenger, side airbags for front seats, driver knee and curtain shield airbags, one per side and covers both front and rear side windows.
The new Hilux is also equipped with a comprehensive array of active safety systems, to help prevent collisions and maximise vehicle stability such as ABS, Brake Assist (BA) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD). In addition, an anti-theft system is standard across all models.

Power and Performance

Powering the new Hilux continues to be the reliable and proven KD series engines in 2.5 litre and 3.0 litre variants. All of which are powered by 4-cylinder inline 16 valve DOHC (double over-head camshaft), common rail diesel system.
The 2KD 2.5 litre Standard model engine produces a maximum power of 75Kw @3600 r/min with a maximum torque of 260Nm @ 1600-2400 r/min with a 6 speed manual transmission.
The 1KD 3.0 litre model engine produces a maximum power of 120Kw @3400 r/min with a maximum torque of 343Nm @1400-3200 r/min with the 6-speed manual transmission and a maximum torque of 360Nm @1600-3000 r/min with the 5-speed automatic transmission.
